Today was our first Toddler Storytime since June and our theme was Outer Space. I had a great group that all loved space, so it was very fun!
Here is the agenda I had:
.5)Hello Song with Lambchop
1.)Book One-Frog in Space
2.)Zoom Zoom Zoom song
3.)The Planets flannel board and rhyme
4.)Book Two-Space Case
5.)Astronaut puppet with flannel board and rhyme
6.)Book Three-There was an old Martian… with flannel board
7.)Book Four-Space Shuttle Blasts Off
8.)5 Little Rockets flannel board and story
Lampchop says goodbye and gives hugs.
1.)
First I started out with a fun space book involving a frog! This was a fun quick book and it talks about a frog getting a fun ride in a space ship out into the universe. The kids loved how much the frog would eat the bugs even in space! A fun read.
2.)
Then we sang a fun song together from Jbrary, Zoom Zoom Zoom. It was a super hit and I love this song! There are motions that you can see on Jbrary’s site! There is also different versions of this song that are fun as well.
Zoom Zoom Zoom we’re going to the moon
Zoom Zoom Zoom we’re going to the moon
If you want to take a trip climb aboard my rocket ship
Zoom Zoom Zoom we’re going to the moon
In 5, 4, 3, 2, 1 BLAST OFF
3.)
Next I did a flannel board and a song. I was able to find these awesome planets online and print them out to make my flannel board. We did the rhyme 8 Little Plants that you can find on Miss Meg’s webiste.
First Verse
One little, two little, three little planets.
Four little, five little, six little planets.
Seven little planets and here’s the eighth orbiting the sun.
Second Verse
Mercury, Venus, and the Earth
Mars, Jupiter, and Saturn.
Uranus, and then there’s Neptune orbiting the sun.
4.)
Next book was ‘Space Case’ and it was a book about an alien space ship getting to trick or trick and go to school with earthlings.
5.)
Then I had an awesome astronaut puppet that the kids loved and it got a conversation going about what astronauts do and where they work. Then I did a flannel with this and a fun rhyme to the tune of ‘If you’re happy and you know it’.
“If you’re going to the moon wear your gloves (clap, clap)
If you’re going to the moon wear your gloves (clap, clap)
If you’re going to the moon this is what you need to do,
If you’re going to the moon wear your gloves (clap, clap)
Other verses include: wear your boots (stomp , stomp)
wear your helmet (tap head)
6.)
Book Three was “There Was An Old Martian Who Swallowed the Moon” and I made my own accompanying flannel board to it. I made a huge martian so that I could put each object that he eats inside of his tummy. The kids loved it!
7.)
Then we read our last book “Space Shuttle Blasts Off”. This was a tougher book for this age group than I thought. It was on the long side but it might have been because we were nearing the end. It is a great book though that teaches how rockets blast off in a fun way.
8.)
Lastly I did a flannel board and story: Five Little Rockets
“5 little rockets zooming off in space.
The 1st rocket said, ‘Let’s have a race!’
The 2nd rocket said, ‘Line up in a row’
The 3rd rocket said, ‘Ready, Set, Go’
The 4th rocket said, ‘Beep, Beep, Beep’
The 5th rocket said ‘ You can’t catch me’
Then roar went their engines and blink went their lights and five little rockets zoomed out of sight. “
We had a great time! Next week will be camping!
Extra
I had another fun song that I didn’t get to that I will include here for you it was I’m a Little Rocket to the tune of I’m a Little Teapot.
“I’m a little rocket, tall and thin
Here is my nose cone
Here is my fins
When I get all fired up, launch begins
Watch me rise and see me spin.”
