Toddler Storytime-Best Friends

Today in Toddler Storytime our topic was BEST FRIENDS 🙂  I had lots of little friends join me today!  Our plan was this:

1.) Hello Song with Lamb Chop

2.) Book One: Monsters Vs. Kittens

3.) Book Two with Flannel Board: Bear and Hare: Where’s Bear?

4.) Flannel Board: Five Little Ladybugs

5.) Book Three: You Are Not My Friend, but I Miss You

6.) Flannel Board: Five Apples in a Pie

7.) Song: If You’re Friendly and You Know It

8.) Book Four: Friends

9.) Mary Had a Little Lamb Flannel Board and Puppet

10.) Book Five: Will You Be My Friend?

11.) Goodbye Song and Lamb Chop Hugs

I had a lot of rhymes planned but the group seemed to want more books! So I was happy that I had five all planned out just in case!  I also wanted to incorporate the song, “The More We Get Together” and the rhyme “Where is Thumbkin”, but we didn’t get to those so I will incorporate them later on down the line.

So we first did our hello song with Lamb Chop.  While I was planning this storytime I felt that maybe it was time to change up the hello song but the kids are finally starting to sing along with me so I’m going to keep it around for a while longer!  Lamb Chop sung and danced with us too!

Then we got right into the first book, Monsters Vs. Kittens by: Dani Jones.  This book was adorable and went right along with our theme from last week, monsters, so the kids were very excited!  This book talks about how different monsters and kittens are but that they are still friends and find the similarities together.

Next I did a flannel board to go with the book, Bear and Hare: Where’s Bear? by: Emily Garrett.

This was a really fun book to do a flannel board with.  Each page of the book has Bear hiding behind something different, so the kids got to take turns and hide Bear.  Then I would say, ‘Is that a good hiding place for Bear?’.  Hare also counts each time that Bear hides so the group got a lot of counting in today.

Next I did a ‘Five Little Ladybugs’ Flannel Board

5 little ladybugs sitting on a door, 1 flew away and then there were 4.

4 little ladybugs sitting on a tree, 1 flew away and then there were 3.

3 little ladybugs sitting in the sun, 1 flew away and then there were 2.

2 little ladybugs sitting on a shoe, 1 flew away and then there was 1.

1 little ladybug sitting on a house, she flew away and then there were none.

Next we did Book Three, You Are Not My Friend, but I Miss You. by:Daniel Kirk.  The kids loved the pictures in this book. The sock monkey is adorable.  It teaches a great lesson of sharing with your friends.

We did a very funny flannel next, Five Apples in a Pie.IMG_0741

The 1st apple in the basket was bright and shiny red.

The 2nd apple in the basket said, “My, what a cozy bed”.

The 3rd apple in the basket said, ‘Make room for me.’

The 4th apple in the basket said, ‘Please move over!’

The 5th apple in the basket said, ‘Oh dear, oh my, this looks like a pie!’

We all did a song together after this to the tune of ‘If you’re happy and you know it’

If you’re friendly and you know it clap your hands.

If you’re friendly and you know it clap your hands.

If you’re friendly and you know it and you really want to show it, if you’re friendly and you know it clap your hands!

We did this rhyme twice through with each action.  The kids got to pick what actions we did for the next two times.  After clapping our hands, we stomped our feet and waved our hands.

Next we read, Friends, by: Eric Carle.  The kids were amazed at the pictures in this book.  I think it was because of all of the colors. A very cute book with great Eric Carle illustrations and the two are reunited in the end!

IMG_0743Then I did a flannel board with a rhyme.  I did Mary has a little lamb with a puppet for Mary and had printed sheep in different colors.  So each time the rhyme went there was a different color sheep.  The kids gave me an object that was the same as the color.  For example, “Mary had a little lamb whose fleece was yellow as a banana”.  The kids had a ball with this.

The kids wanted to hear another story so then we read, Will You Be My Friend?,  by:  Nancy Tafuri.  This was an adorable book to end storytime with and the kids loved it!

Lastly, we closed with our goodbye song and Lamb Chop gave everyone hugs goodbye.  Next week the theme will be THE ZOO! I can’t wait! There will be very special guests.  Come back and check out the fun next week!
