Rockin’ Readers-World Turtle Day!

Rockin’ Readers is my group of K-2nd graders that come to the library right after school for 45 minutes and are FULL of energy, but it’s a blast 🙂 I read 2 stories, we do a quick craft, a fun game, and they get snack while I read the last story.

Today was World Turtle Day.  I usually do the same theme for both my toddler story time and my Rockin’ Readers group.

Our first book we read was ‘The Dragon and the Turtle’ by: Donita Paul.  It is a great story about friendship.  The kids really liked this book because there was lots of opportunities for me to ask them questions about what was going to happen next. They love being involved in the story you are reading and it helps them to pay attention.

The second book I read was ‘Yes, Yes, Yaul’ by: Jef Czekaj.  This book is FUN and hilarious.  It is about a rapping turtle and bunny duo and they meet Yaul who is famous for saying NO!  The kids loved this because I, Miss Madelyn, had to rap! It was a lot of fun.

Next we did our craft, which was egg carton turtles.  I had traced out turtles that they had to cut out.  I cut out all the egg carton pieces so that each child had their own individual turtle shell.  They got to color in the shell with crayons or markers.  Then they put google eyes on their turtle.  The adults did the gluing of the shell to the turtle cut out so that we could move on to the game.  There isn’t enough time to do a detailed craft so I pick quick and easy ones that the kids will enjoy.  I find ALL of my crafts on Pinterest mostly.  Follow me on Pinterest! I post LOTS of ideas for programming for ALL AGES:)

RR Craft

After the kids were done with the craft I sent them to the carpet with two pieces of a puzzle, a YERTLE THE TURTLE puzzle.  They had to work together to get the puzzle done.  It was not how I envisioned it would be, but they got it done with some adult help.  This activity is better for a smaller group because with a large group we had a lot of kids who lost interest or got pushed out quickly.  It was a cute puzzle though and the kids who participated through the whole thing enjoyed it.

After the puzzle then the kids got what they had been asking for since the first second of Rockin’ Readers…SNACK! While they were having snack I read the ‘Yertle the Turtle’ story by: Dr. Seuss.  It was a good one 🙂

Overall I think the kids had a great time.  I know I had a great time 🙂 Next week is Hug your Cat Day.  Come back soon to see how it goes 🙂
